"Philander Barnes died of consumption last Friday. The funeral was held at the home of his sister Mrs. Wm. Cain last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. Hayes of Westville, and the remains were interred in what is known as the eight-square cemetery. He has been sick for a
long time but has suffered little, just wasted slowly away." Chesterton Tribune - 5/20/1892
There is a listing of a gravestone in a typewritten copy: "Philander Barnes, Co. I, 48 Ind. Inf." At the time of the listing, Philander is buried next JP Barnes and Ida Barnes. On the other side: John Storm 1844-1959. It was still there for a 1968 listing done by the Daughter of American Colonists, NW Ind, Duneland Chapter.

At one point, this bio had indicated there was no tombstone marker and it was reported that none could be found; however, it seems that a marker was located and is currently posted. It is clearly a Civil War military marker and it does cite that he served in Co. I, 48 Ind. Inf. Therefore, a tombstone does exist.
