Cynthia Holt Cummings was an author of a popular collection of poetry books for children and adults. She entered eternal life at her home. She was 88 years old.

Cynthia was one of four children. She was raised on the family's small dairy farm in West Boylton, Massachusetts. She became a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1941. During World War II, she served as a member of the Army Nurse Corps for four years, including 33 months spent in North Africa and Italy.

After marrying in 1947, she and her husband moved to Detroit, Michigan, when he was hired by National Bank of Detroit as a credit analyst. Cynthia retired from nursing to devote her time to raising a family, volunteer activities, and writing. Although she did not begin her writing career in earnest until age 60, she managed to publish 11 colorfully illustrated hardcover books with Christmas-related themes, including a series of books on a family of lovable teddy bears. She shunned typewriters and computers and preferred putting her thoughts into words with pen and paper.

Cynthia's writing career began as compilations of poetry in the form of handmade Christmas cards sent to family and close friends. Encouraged by a favorable response, and urged on by her supportive husband, she began writing full-time.
Sales of her books have totaled more than 115,000 copies with many of them sold in local gift shops and bookstores.

Her husband, Richard Cummings, said, "She was an extremely creative person with a vivid imagination who derived the greatest pleasure from writing. Mornings were her creative time, and she would sit at the kitchen table for hours lost in thought. Most of her ideas were gathered from everyday situations involving family, friendship and her wartime experiences as a nurse."

In addition to her husband, survivors include her son, Roger; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service: Monday, March 3, 2008, 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1589 W. Maple, in Birmingham, Michigan
