Del Harp, 87, of Uvalde, died February 15, 2008 after a courageous six month struggle with illness. He was born May 27, 1920 in Sabinal to William Dow and Willie Lee Wilkerson Harp. He and his identical twin Don were the fourth and fifth children in the family of Nellie Dow, Lex Ambrous, Monte, and Billie Jean, all of whom predeceased him.

After graduation from Crystal City High School, where the twins were star athletes in football and track, they enlisted in 1941 at Ft. Sam Houston in the Air Corps. Don was killed in an air crash in the Pacific in 1943. Technical Sgt. Del Harp went on to serce as an Aerial Engineer-Gunner in the Air Corps, US Army. He was presented three Bronze Battle Stars for meritorious achievement while participating in an aerial flight on December 23, 1942, Campaign Guadalcanal August 1942 through February 1943 and Campaign Central Pacific December 1941 through December 1943. He was awarded three Oak Leaf Cluster Air Medals for bomber strike sorties flown during the periods of February through March 1943, during June 1943 and August through September 1943. Del received the Distinguished Flying Cross in the South Pacific Arena for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights on combat operational missions in November 1943.

On June 18, 1944 he married Kathryn Curtis in the Methodist Church in Crystal City. The tow made their home in Crystal City until 2007 when they moved to Uvalde, TX. Their son Major David Curtis Harp, Air Force, stationed in Germany, was killed in February 28, 1984 in a training mission crash in a C-130 over Spain.

Mr. Harp was head of the Texas Employment Commission in Crystal City, which he ran until retirement. Early on, in the late 1940's and early 50's he and his brother Lex owned the Crystal City Café and later started the Business Equipment Co. together. In later years, Mr. Harp's avocation was picture framing. He developed a clientele of customer friends in his business called DelCraft. The Harp work ethic and enthusiasm for staying active served him well.

Del had a musical talent and played the guitar, bass fiddle, and his special red fiddle when the occasion was right. He enjoyed singing old favorites and knew every work of the long ballads, the cowboy songs, and the ones like Milk Cow Blues. He loved to hunt doves, and he enjoyed driving over to Piedras Negras to eat at El Moderno.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, "Kay Honey" Harp, by their grandchildren Lisa and John Lum of Fairfax, VA, Amanda Harp of Portland, OR, and Colin Harp of Los Angeles, CA, two great grandchildren, Sian and Leah Lum, their daughter-in-law Patricia Williams Harp Scott and Lt. Col. Curt Scott of Home, WA and by many friends and extended family.
