John was a black Revolutionary War soldier, who was at the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. The battle took place at Blacksburg, SC near the North and South Carolina borders. He was listed as a man servant for Col. William Campbell, but was the only slave in the Patriot army, known to be present at the battle. John lived to be 109 and died in Saltville, Va.
