Disaster Memorial. Memorial dedicated to the memory of unidentified and unrecovered bodies of the victims of Air New Zealand Flight 901 which crashed into the northern face of Mount Erebus on November 28th, 1979 with the loss of all 257 passengers and crew. eighty three percent of all victims were identified however, due to the isolation on Ross Island and the extreme conditions of both the terrain and weather, some bodies could not be retrieved and identified. In 1980, the memorial was erected in Waikumete Cemetery, listing all forty-four victims whose remains were either not identified or not recovered from Antarctica.
