At 7:17 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 1985, a fatal earthquake occurred that shook central, southern and western Mexico, particularly Mexico City, where it was felt at 07:19 due to the arrival of the S wave of the earthquake, which became the most significant and damaging in the written history of telluric movements in that country and its capital. The government reported the death of between 6,000 and 7,000 people, however years later the approximate record was calculated at 10,000 deaths. As of September 22, 1985, and due to the advanced state of decomposition of the unidentified human remains and the problems they could cause to the population, it was decided to take them to the mass graves of the cemeteries of San Lorenzo Tezonco, San Nicolás Tolentino and the Panteón Civil de Dolores.
