Mrs. Hortense Quintard, Former Actress, Dies

Mrs. Hortense Quintard, of 1917 Renfro St., onetime Shakespearean and Ibsen stage actress, died at 9:15 p.m. yesterday in St. John's hospital, following an illness of 10 years. She was 77 years old.

Mrs. Quintard was born Sept. 14, 1876, in Nashville, Tenn., a daughter of Emiris (Erasmus) and Sarah Ann Kilroy Nielsen, and had been a resident of Springfield off and on since 1929.

She appeared as Hortense Nielsen in the classics on the stage.

Her leading roles included "Nora" in Ibsen's "A Doll's House" in 1908 and "Cleopatra" in Shakespeare's "Anthony and Cleopatra." Mrs. Quintard at one time appeared with Maurice Barrymore, father of Lionel, John and Ethel Barrymore, and also played in productions at the old Chatterton theater, which was located at Sixth and Jefferson Sts. Her husband, Charles Arthur Quintard, died in 1929. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Alice Nielsen, who was also a stage actress.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Garvin, of New York City, N.Y., and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Smide, of Springfield.

The body was taken to the Bisch Memorial home.
