Opera Singer. A mezzosoprano, she triumphed with her coloratura roles in Rossini's operas and she was acclaimed as one of the greatest opera singer of her times. She studied piano and in 1957 obtained her first success at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence. She also sung in La Scala in Milan, in Covent Garden, Viena's Opera, the Metropolitan Operas of New York and in Dallas, where she shared the stage with Maria Callas. One of the highlights of her career was her performance during the Universal Exhibition in Seville at the La Maestranza theatre, where she sang "Carmen," by Bizet. In addition to opera, she also sung zarzuela, Italian aria, lied, and a wide repertoire of Spanish and French music. She wrote the book "Flor de soledad y silencio. Meditaciones de una cantante." She was awarded the Príncipe de Asturias Award for the Arts in 1991 and the National Music Award in 1996. She left her last will: "I want to go quietly. I don't want public announcements, or wakes, or anything. I came into the world and no one found out, so I wish the same when I leave."
