WILLIAMS, Elizabeth Patterson, 97, died peacefully at home at the Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Born May 10, 1910 to John Legerwood Patterson and Margaret Newman Patterson in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., she moved to Richmond with her family in 1919, where she graduated from St. Catherine's School in 1928. After taking a degree in music from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, N.Y., she traveled and returned to Richmond for volunteer work with the Junior League. In June 1940, she married the Rev. Dr. John Page Williams of Richmond, who had just been elected Headmaster of St. Christopher's School, and devoted herself to the duties of a headmaster's wife. In 1951, her husband became Dean of the Church Schools in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. Meanwhile, she became a loving homemaker, and together they raised a son and a daughter. She also served as a member of the Altar Guild at St. Stephen's Church and of the Three Chopt Garden Club. In retirement, she and her husband split their time between Richmond and Sandy Point, on the lower Potomac, traveling occasionally. In 1990, they moved to the then new Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, where she loved to look at the Blue Ridge each day. She was an active member of WCBR's Chapel, Health Care, and Library Committees and of St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church. Her husband died in December 2000. She is survived by her son, John Page Williams Jr. of Annapolis, Md. and his wife, Louise McKenna Williams; her daughter, Elizabeth Williams Poist of Charlottesville and her husband, the Rev. David H. Poist; a grandson, Chad David Poist of Los Angeles, Calif.; a granddaughter, Kelly Williams McCaskill of Alexandria and her husband, Duncan P. McCaskill; and another granddaughter, Margaret Frances Poist of Fayetteville, Ark. and her fianc‚, J. Matthew Reynolds. The family would like to thank the staff of the Westminster-Canterbury, especially for their tender and loving care of her in her last year. A memorial service will take place at St. Paul's Memorial Church in Charlottesville on Saturday, January 26, at 2 p.m. with a reception at the church to follow. Committal at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond will be for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Memorial Church, 1700 University Avenue, Charlottesville, Va. 22903 or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, Md. 21403.
