Last King of Burma. Thu Thiri Maha Dhamma Yaza, Prince of Thibaw, was the King of Burma, reigning from 1878 to 1885. He was the son of King Pagan and his consort, Laungshe Mibaya. He married three of his half-sisters who became his consorts. In 1878, he ascended to the Lion Throne after a bloody succession massacre caused by the Queen Dowager Hsinbyumashin. In 1885, he called upon the Royal Armed Forces of Burma to liberate Lower Burma from the British, who had taken it in 1824. The army was defeated by the British and he was forced to abdicate, ending the 1000-year-old Burmese monarchy. He and his family were exiled to Ratnagiri, India, where they lived in the Thibaw Palace. He died in 1916 and was buried in a tomb with his minor consort, Supayalay in Ratnagiri.
