Born into a family of entertainers, her father was actor Bobby Howes (1895-1972), her mother Patricia Malone made a name for herself on the Broadway stage and her maternal grandfather J.A.E. Malone was a Broadway director. She followed her family's career paths into the entertainment industry and made her motion picture debut at the age of thirteen in the film "Thursday's Child" (1943). She made her stage debut in the production "Caprice" followed by "Paint Your Wagon" (1953 to 1954) both on London's West End and succeeded Julie Andrews on Broadway in the role of 'Eliza Doolittle' in "My Fair Lady" (1958 to 1959). She distinguished herself when she received a Tony Award nomination for "Brigadoon" (1963) and had memorable performances in the play "What Makes Sammy Run?" (1964 to 1965). She will be best remembered by movie audiences for playing 'Truly Scrumptious' in the fantasy-musical film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968). She returned to the Broadway stage after a thirty-five year absence and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for "James Joyce's The Dead" (2000). She was formerly married to lyricist Richard Adler from 1958 to 1966.
