William "Bones" Bonesteel, 73, passed away due to medical complications on October 2, 2021. A devoted husband of over 50 years, Bones leaves behind his loving wife Carol and his adoring children, Aaron and Lia.
The oldest of 3 offspring, Diane Bob and George, Bones is credited for keeping his younger siblings "off the metro pages" while growing up. A grandfather to four adorable children, Rhys, Saphira, Aleena, and Joaquin, Bones was lovingly called "PopPop" by the new generation of Bonesteel′s.
Vietnam Service
Assigned to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion 1st Marines, in 1969, Bones was responsible for maintaining the operation readiness of the Battalions communication capabilities. In addition, he regularly volunteered for the daily mine clearing detail, and was a member of the Battalions "quick reaction" force. His mettle under fire being tested on more than a few occasions. Bones also participated in the largest Battalion operation of its day, "Operation Pipestone Canyon".
Bones will forever be known in the annals of 2/1 lore, as being only one of two Marines, ever to miss their "freedom bird" flight home. Rumor has it, that Bones reluctance to leave his 2/1 brothers, played a major part in his missing that flight.
A true modest Renaissance man, Bones designed and built beautiful family homes. He was most proud of his stone work. Encouraged by Lia to take pictures of his creations, Bones never felt the need. Saying, if he needed a memory, all he had to do was cast an eye on that which he created. To his family, Bones could do most everything. A lover of the outdoors, Bones enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.
He will be missed.
