Professional Football Player, Sports Broadcaster. For seven seasons (1953 and 1956 to 1961), he played at the defensive halfback position in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles. For more than a decade (1975 to 1987) along with Pat Summerall, Brookshier formed a popular broadcasting pair for nationally-televised NFL games with CBS. Born Thomas Jefferson Brookshier, he was a multi-sport athlete at Roswell High School in New Mexico where he achieved All-State status, as he participated in football, baseball and basketball. He enrolled at the University of Colorado, where he played collegiate football (fullback) and baseball (pitcher). Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles during the 10th round of the 1953 NFL Draft, his career was interrupted while he served for two years (1954 to 1955) with the United States Air Force. During the course of his career, he distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl status twice (1959 and 1960) and All-Pro recognition in 1960. He was a key contributor to the Philadelphia Eagles team who captured the 1960 NFL Title against the Green Bay Packers. He suffered a career-ending leg injury during the 1961 season and retired after totaling 76 career regular-season games. He began a lengthy career in broadcasting, initially as a sports director with WCAU in Philadelphia, prior to serving as an analyst for Philadelphia Eagles' broadcasts. During the early 1970s, Brookshier was first paired with Pat Summerall on the program "This Week in Pro Football." He became a radio sports talk show host in the Philadelphia area. He was named to the Philadelphia Eagles Roll of Honor and his uniform number 40 was retired by the Eagles. Brookshier remained active in team related functions until his death from cancer.
