US Congressman. He represented Michigan 1st. District from January 3, 2011 until January 3, 2017. Benishek was a member of the Republican party. He was the son of Joseph Benishek and Helen Benishek. His first job was helping to run the family business, the Iron River Hotel until he went to college. He attended the University of Michigan where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. He then graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1978. Prior to being elected to Congress he was a general surgeon for the Dickinson County Healthcare System. In 2010 he defeated the Democratic nominee and was sworn into office on January 5, 2011 as the new Congressman from Michigan's 1st district. Benishek was pro-life and pro-gun rights and in favor of a smaller government and in favor of reducing government spending, he also supported term limits. In 2015 he announced that he was retiring at the end of his term and wouldn't seek re-election for a fourth term. He was married to Judy Benishek at the time of his death and they had 5 children.
