Laotian Politician. He served as the 3rd President of Laos from November 25, 1992 to February 24, 1998. He helped found the Laotian revolutionary movement in 1945 and ten years later, in 1955, played a major role in the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. He later served in the National Assembly for a year before being arrested in 1959. He spent a year in prison before escaping along with Souphanouvong. During the 1960s and 1970s, he led the party in Khangkhay and in 1975, became a deputy prime minister after the communist takeover of the country. He would continue serving in the hierarchy of the government until 1992, when he became the president of the country, upon the death of Kaysone Phomvihane. He served in this post until 1998, when he retired from public office. After his retirement, he continued to serve within the party.
