Farmer and Soldier of the War of 1812. He entered federal service at Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 18, 1813, as a private soldier in Captain John R. Clark's company of infantry, also known as the "Raleigh Volunteer Guards," which was detached from the Wake Regiment, North Carolina Militia, pursuant to an order from the Governor of North Carolina. He served under Major-General Calvin Jones in defense of the Atlantic Coast at Newbern, then blockaded by a British squadron. He was honorably discharged with his company, by reason of expiration of enlistment, on August 13, 1813.
