Karl Johan Niklas Jonasson (changed "Jonasson" to "Berglund") was born in Sweden, the son of Jonas Jonasson and Maria Catherina Nilsdotter. When he immigrated to America in 1869 with his wife Lovisa (Louisa), instead of keeping his Swedish "family" name of Jonasson, he chose "Berglund" as the family name.

Karl and Louvisa had eight children while in Sweden: Augusta Charlotta, Clara Sophia, Carl (Charley) August, Mathilda Josephina, Emelie (died at 1 year old), Vendla (Mary), Jonas Alfred, and Emilia Christina.

In 1872, they moved to Moingona, Iowa, where they had their sixth child, Edward. Karl worked in the coal mines in Moingona, but in 1877 he bought a farm on section 33, west of Lanyon, in Lost Grove township, of Webster County, Iowa, and moved his family there.

During the winter months, Karl continued to work in the coal mines in Moingona. Unfortunately, he became ill (due to "Black Lung" from coal dust) and died during the winter of 1878 (February 14th). Due to the bad weather and difficulty traveling then, he was buried in the Oakwood cemetery in Moingona instead of Lost Grove near his family.
A memorial marker is placed next to his wife's grave in the Lost Grove Cemetery.
