Entertainer, Politician. Born Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano, he was known for his showmanship and for pioneering styles of merengue and salsa. In a career spanning six decades, he would go on to release more than 100 albums, winning six Latin Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award in 2006. From 1998 to 2002, he served as mayor of the capital of the Dominican Republic.
