He had been a sailor (for commercial lines I think) who then came to the United States in 1881, and settled in a very Norwegian area near Leland, Illinois, on a 40-acre farm on a road known locally as "Easy Street." His parents were Gunder Jensen Hegland & Joran Torgiesdatter. His children's last name (by Norwegian custom) were Jensen or Jensdatter. I think he had two sons, Gunder and Karl (Anglicized to Charles), and a daughter, Gurine. She ended up in a mental hospital in Iowa, and is not mentioned in his obituary.
