Actor. A longtime stalwart of American television, often in comedic roles, he will be remembered for playing 'Vinnie' the regular poker player in the series "The Odd Couple" (1970 to 1974) and as "Doctor Bernie Tupperman" in "The Bob Newhart Show" (1972 to 1976). Born Lawrence Sheldon Gelman into a Jewish Family, his father was a commercial artist. After service with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, he began his career as an entertainer and made his television debut with a minor part in a 1966 episode of the series "Mission: Impossible." He made his motion picture debut in the film "The Busy Body" (1967) and had further TV credits during the 1960s with "I Dream of Jeannie," "The Monkees." "Batman," "Get Smart," My Three Sons" and "The Flying Nun." He received an Emmy Award nomination for a 1977 episode of the series "Barney Miller" titled "Goodbye Mr. Fish: Part 2." He appeared in the Disney films "Superdad" (1973) and "The Strongest Man in the World" (1975). He may be best remembered by film audiences for playing "Mr. Webber" in the picture "Dreamscape" (1984).
