He was born Oct. 13, 1916 in Interlaken. He died from pneumonia and a long illness of Parkinsons disease. For the past 40 years he lived in Sarasota, Fla., and during the past 20 years, he also resided in Chester. He attended the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., class of 1939. Under Mr. Mennen's direction, the family-owned company's worldwide sales grew tenfold to establish itself as a leader in health and beauty aids. Some of the well-known brand names were Skin Bracer After Shave, Speed Stick deodorants, and Baby Magic baby products, as well as the familiar advertising jingle, By Mennen. After 114 years, The Mennen Company was sold in 1992 to the Colgate Palmolive Company. Mr. Mennen stressed that the company must be a good corporate citizen in its community. Mr. Mennen and his family made many philanthropic gifts. An aviator, he was at one time the owner of a fixed wing-based operation at the Morristown airport. He donated a rare World War II Spartan Executive aircraft to the Air Museum in Oshkosh, Wis. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathryn L. Anderson Mennen; three sons, William G. Mennen III, of Peapack-Gladstone, John H. Mennen, of Chester, and George Jeff Mennen of Bernardsville; a daughter, Christina Andrea of Plano, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are by the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road, Chester.
