Born way before her time. Achieved local fame and fortune on her own when it was unheard of for a woman to this. Restored over 50 historic homes in New Bern, NC. Personally responsible for the New Bern Civic Theatre having a permanent home. Purchased and GAVE the old athen's theatre to the NBCT in memory of her beloved daughter Saax Bradbury, an aspiring, beautiful actress who was killed in an airplane crash on November 13,1976 at the age of 33. Mama never truly recovered from that. The theatre is now known as the "Saax Bradbury Playhouse, Home of the New Bern Civic Theatre". Mama's first husband Alex Thomson, Saax's father, was killed at Guadalcanal WW2. He flew a Corsair and was shot down, 32 years later his only daughter Saax died in an airplane crash. Life is weird sometimes.
Mama was my best friend and I miss her beyond anyway to describe it. Her ashes reside in my living room. I'm keeping her with me always. Mama won a look-a-like contest of Vivien Leigh in 1939.....big contest....held at the state capitol in Raleigh, nc. She was a dead ringer for Scarlette O'Hara. She was married to my father Edwin Harry Bradbury who also flew corsairs during WW2. He looked like Glynn Ford. Mama told Daddy he had to get out of the airforce before she'd marry him, She would not add more "fodder" to the war. He was honorably discharged.Mama and Daddy had five children, Sara Alexander (Saax) Thomson Bradbury; killed in an airplane crash Nov. 13th 1976, Elizabeth Elaine Bradbury who died at 4 months old in 1946 of water on the brain, Edwin Osborn Bradbury; retired DMA, Nathaniel Macon; hairdresser and Jo Anne Bradbury; international Financial advisor. Daddie's great uncle was William Batchelder Bradbury who wrote the music to "Jesus Loves me, Just as I am" along with many other famouse hyms sung today. Mama was the smartest woman I have ever met!! No one could out smart her. She had 5 older brother's, Dr. James Osborne Baxter Jr. OD., John Robert Baxter, Benjamin Hunt Baxter, Dr. Nathaniel Macon Baxter OD., Theodore Joshua Baxter and a menenite father, Dr. James Osborne Baxter Sr. OD. Mother was Sara Maria (Vidie) Gaskill Baxter. Mama's father had a personal hand in discovering the way to detect glaucoma and many other practices used in optometry today. He witnessed the signing into law in 1909 making Optometry a legalized profession. He erected the "Baxter Clock" here in New Bern which is now on the National registery. There are only three like them in the world. Mama was living with me when she passed from this cruel world after a 17 year battle with non hodgkins nodular related lymphoma and a massive stroke that destroyed her left frontal lobe .....into..... eternal bliss. She told me several times the first person she wanted to see when she arrived in heaven was Saax. Smart women do not have an easy time of it in this male dominated realm but she outdid them all and took it to the bank regularly. You've heard the expression "Steel Magnolia"? She may not have achieved world fame but here in New Bern, NC., she was very famous and well known for her wit, charm, unflinching nerve in the face of adversity and her undyling love for her family. You couldn't beat her at bridge either. She and I clicked from the git go. I was her favorite child out of 4. . She'll be gone from our lives 1 year Dec. 14th 2007. It's about time I did this for her. The power's that be on this website have told me she's not "famous". She is to me!! I can only hope you get to read this. I had a trully remarkable woman for a mother. One of her favorite expressions she would use was "I'll save you the ignominity of gossip and tell you what I think of you to your face"!!If she ever said it to you.....you were sunk.
Mama had a smile that could light up the universe. I miss it.....she's famous to me....very!!
