John Russel Belt, a resident of this community for many years, passed away at his home on Monday, March 14, 1938, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

Mr. Belt was born April 1, 1853, in the state of Indiana. In early manhood he moved to Jackson County, Minnesota. In 1876 he was united in marriage to Phinetta Young at Bass Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. To this union nine children were born: May Belt of Sheboygan, WI; William Belt of Everett, WA; Agnes Lozier of Robe, WA; Lizzie Williams of Sheboygan, WI; Daizy Wade, Frances Wade, and Dewey Belt, all of Hayward; and Martha and Benjamin who died in childhood. In the year 1899 Mr. Belt and family moved by covered wagon to Hayward, residing for a time near Round Lake, then taking a homestead near Chipboenazie Lake in the town of Stinnett, Washburn county, where he resided until the time of his death.

His was a long, eventful life and he will be long remembered by friends and neighbors and greatly mourned by his sons and daughters.

His wife preceded him in death two years ago in December.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Congregational church, Rev. RJ Barnes officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. The Alexander Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
