Lewis Cates, age 35, enlisted on December 31, 1861, at Newport. He was listed at home on sick furlough in Company E muster roll for January and February 1862. He died of pneumonia on March 5, 1862, in Cocke County, Tennessee.

On this 5" day of January 1863 personally appeared before me the Subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for said County Rachel Cates who after being sworn according to case deposes and says that she is the widow of Lewis Cates deceased who was a private in Captain Thos S Gormans company of Col John C MLins Regiment of Tennessee mounted volunteers — in the service of the Confederate States in the present war with the United States, and that the said Lewis Cates entered the service at Newport in the County of Cocke Tennessee on or about the 24" day of December 1861. and died at his residence in said county of Cocke on the 5th day of March 1862, leaving her widowed Rachel Cates and three children the oldest about 16 years of age and the youngest about 6 years of age. That Rachel Cates makes this deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the Government of the Confederate States whatever may have been due the said Lewis Cates at the time of his death for pay bounty or other allowance for his service as a private aforesaid
