James Moffett, was the son of John Moffett and Jane Ledgerwood, plus the grandson of James Moffett, William Ledgerwood and Agness "Mitchell." He was born on "Black Creek" and died in Staunton.
He married Mary Stuart, the daughter of Thomas Stuart and Elizabeth Moore, on 29 Dec 1789 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Rev. Samuel Carrick officiated (Augusta Co., Virginia, Marriage Record, handwritten booklet says "1789 Decemr 29th James Moffett to Mary Stuart." Familysearch database, Film # 007578826, item 1, 21 of 351).
He built a stone house on Christians Creek. His son Robert Stuart Moffett, lived on part of his father's farm in later years.
James and the Moffett family were involved in church history at both North Mountain and Bethel which it became. There is a long 3 column article in the 31 Jan 1882 issue of the Staunton Spectator, Vol. 59, #20, written by Matthew Pilson 26 Jan 1882. It includes some data on the location, cemetery, Preachers, Elders, members, builders, etc. It's hard to find a lot of data on Bethel and the former North Mountain Church. (Also see Bethel & Her Ministers by Dr. Herbert S. Turner.) The entire article is online at the Library of Virginia. It mentions JAMES MOFFETT, Robt Doak, Saml Blackwood, Wm Willson & Saml Finley were on the building committee of the 2nd church at Bethel in 1822. It was rebuilt the 3rd time in 1889.
See Augusta County, Virginia Will Book 16, p 427 for the distribution of his estate amongst his family heirs. It was settled on 29 Mar 1827.

The 26 Mar 1878 issue of the Staunton Spectator, includes an article called Bethel Church-Yard. It includes over 500 people, listed within, including "James Moffett" No dates are given.
The location of his marker is pretty close to the church, near the end of the building. This photo was taken in 1996. Sorry for the shadow and what an oops.
The Works Progress Administration Inventory Project of Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery by Scioto M. Herndon on 11 Aug 1936, has the exact same transcription on James Moffett's marker as below.
