Writer. He was best known for his 1966 novel, "Ranjau Sepanjang Jalan." Born to a peasant family in Sik District, Kedah, he attend the Sultan Abdul Hamid College. After graduating in 1954, he worked as a teacher until 1967. After that, he studied at the Australian National University. In 1965, he published his first novel "Rentong." In 1982, he became a professor of literature in the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. In that same year, he was awarded the Malaysian National Laureate award. In 1994, his novel "Ranjau Sepanjang Jalan" was adapted into a Cambodian film titled "Rice People." He died of pneumonia in 2017.
