Malaysian Monarch. He was the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1999 to 2001 and the 8th Sultan of Selangor from 1960 to 2001. Born Tengku Abdul Aziz Shah, he is the eldest son of Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah, the second Yang di-Pertuan Agong. In 1934, he attended the Pengkalan Batu Malay School. He then attended Malay College Kuala Kangsar, but his studies were distrupted due to World War ll. After the war, he studied at the SOAS University of London. In 1946, he was appointed as the Tengku Laksamana of Selangor, and Raja Muda in 1950. In 1960, he ascended to the throne of Selangor after the death of his father. As Sultan, he founded Shah Alam, Selangor's new state capital in 1978. In 1999, he was elected Yang di-Pertuan Agong, succeding Tuanku Ja'afar. He was the second oldest ruler to be elected. In 2001, he had a heart operation to put a pacemaker. He died in office two months later.
