Malaysian Monarch. He was the 8th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1984 to 1989, and the 24th Sultan of Johor from 1981 to 2010. He was the third son of Sultan Ismail. He attended Ngee Heng Primary School, and in 1952, was sent to Australia for his education at the Trinity Grammar School. After returning in 1956, he briefly served as a cadet officer in the Johor Civil Service. In 1981, he ascended to the throne of Johor after his father's death. Later, he was appointed as the Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. In 1984, he was elected Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, succeeding Sultan Ahmad Shah. Shortly before becoming Agong, he proposed for the Orang Aslis to be referred as Bumiputera Asli, as their identity is different from the Malays for the majority of them were not Muslims. The proposal was scrapped. He died of an illness in 2010.
