Politician. He served as the first governor of Sabah from 1963 to 1965, and the third Chief Minister of Sabah from 1967 to 1975. He was also president of the USNO (United Sabah National Organisation) party. Born in Kudat, he was educated at SK St. James. He fought for the liberation of North Borneo over the Japanese Army. During the last days of Japanese occupation he was wanted by the Japanese forces. In 1961, he founded the USNO (United Sabah National Organisation) party. He won the 1967 state election and became the third Chief Minister of Sabah. As Chief Minister, he founded the Sabah Foundation, and planned the first university in Sabah, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Sabah Campus. He also managed to convert many indigenous people in Sabah into Muslim. He lost the state election in 1975. He remained active in politics, leading the USNO party and contesting in four state elections. In 1990, he teamed up with Harris Salleh, which resulted in a merger of USNO and BERJAYA. He died in 1995.
