8th Governor of South Australia. He served as governor from 16 February 1869 to 18 April 1873. Prior to serving as governor, he studied at Cheam, Rugby, and University College, Oxford. He fought in the Crimean War between 1854 and 1855, with the Grenadier Guards and was wounded. He was a Member of Parliament for Ayrshire, Scotland between 1854 and 1857 and between 1859 and 1868. He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary for India between 1866 and 1867. He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Home Department between 1867 and 1868. He then became governor of South Australia. After leaving office he became 6th Governor of New Zealand serving from 14 June 1873 to 3 December 1874. He resigned that post and was Governor of Bombay between 1880 and 1885. Following his retirement, he returned to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Manchester North East, which he represented between 1885 and 1906. He again held political office as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1886 and 1891 and as Postmaster General between 1891 and 1892. He is best remembered for establishing a university in Adelaide, supporting church organizations, educational institutions and showed a particular interest in the Ebenezer Mission School. He also supported the formation of institutions for the blind , deaf and speechless . In 1907 he attended a conference of the British Cotton Growing Association at Jamaica, where on 14 January in a violent earthquake Fergusson he was killed while walking in the street near his hotel.
