Charlene Mitchem Brackett CHARLOTTE - Charlene Mitchem Brackett of Charlotte died peacefully on May 6, 2014, at the age of 95. She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Cleveland County, North Carolina to Annie Ramsey Mitchem and Claude Mitchem. Charlene attended business school in Shelby, North Carolina. Shortly after, she married her childhood sweetheart, Homer Brackett on Sept. 7, 1940 and they made their home in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1948, Charlene and Homer started Standard Crankshaft Company where they worked together until Homer's death in 1987. Charlene remained as the company's president until the age of 75. Charlene was the oldest member of Assurance United Methodist Church(UMC), formerly St. James UMC. During her lifetime, she was an active leader in the church and "Nanny" to the children in the nursery on Sunday mornings. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. Known for her hospitality and generous spirit, Charlene housed many who needed a temporary place to call home and shared her delicious pecan pies with countless people.Funeral service will be Friday at Assurance UMC followed by a graveside service at Kadesh UMC in Belwood.
