Malaysian Monarch. He was the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1960 to 1965, and the 6th Raja of Perlis from 1945 to 2000. Born in Arau, he was educated at the Arau Malay School and later at Penang Free School. In 1938, he joined the Perlis administrative service, becoming a magistrate. In 1940, he was transferred to Kuala Lumpur to serve as Second Magistrate in the Criminal Court. In 1942, Syed Hamzah persuaded then Raja of Perlis Raja Syed Alwi to withdraw Syed Putra's appointment as Bakal Raja and Syed Hamzah himself was appointed to that post. When Raja Syed Alwi died the following year, Syed Hamzah ascended to the throne. However, the British Military Administration refused to recognise he as Raja. In 1945, he abdicated, and Syed Putra ascended to the throne. But due to World War II, he was not installed until 12 March 1949. In 1960, he was elected Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya. After the death of Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah, he became the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya, and was installed on 4 January 1961. Upon the proclamation of the Malaysian Federation, he became Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. His term in office was marked by the Indonesian Confrontation, and the separation of Singapore from Malaysia. He left office on 20 September 1965. He died of a heart attck in 2000. He was the last King of Malaya.
