FATHER OF TWO DIES IN CRASH AT SENNA TRIBUTE RALLY

A 50-year-old motor-racing enthusiast was killed during a classic car rally held in honour of the late Formula One driver Ayrton Senna this weekend.

Christian Devereux, a businessman from West London, died after his Mini Cooper struck another car on the Donington Park circuit during the Historic Festival, which was being held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Senna's victory in the European Grand Prix at Donington. The Brazilian, who is often described as the greatest driver of all time, died in 1994 after a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix.

Mr Devereux, the managing director of a motorcycle hire and insurance company, was taking part in a race for pre-1966 cars when he struck a Ford Mustang and suffered fatal injuries.

Obituary ~
As a former motorbike courier in London, Christian Devereux had built Hexagon Motorcycles into a successful motorcycle accident repair business. He took up racing five seasons ago, racing his Pre-66 Mini Cooper S with verve. He took an involvement in Mini preparation company Dale Motorsport, and enjoyed great success in historic racing across Europe. In 2012 he won the French Mini Trophee Classic Championship, while in the UK he was a front-runner in Masters Pre-66 races. A very popular figure in the paddock, he leaves a wife and two young children as well as many friends in the sport.

DONINGTON PARK CRASH: CHRISTIAN DEVEREUX DIED 'ALMOST INSTANTLY'

Christian Devereux was killed after his 1965 car collided with a Ford Mustang at Donington Park.

The 50-year-old, of Chiswick, west London, was reaching the end of the race last May when his Mini Cooper S entered the track's Coppice corner.

The coroner at the inquest went on to make safety recommendations.

The inquest heard that a 1965 Mustang being driven a short distance ahead by Ben Beighton had spun and ended up almost stationary, facing the wrong way in the centre of the tarmac.

The Mustang driver told Rutland and North Leicestershire Coroners' Court: "I saw him heading to my left and then it seemed almost at the last moment he changed his mind and tried to pass me on the other side and we collided."

Recording a verdict of accidental death, assistant coroner Robert Chapman said he now planned to write to the Motor Sports Association (MSA) asking it to determine whether it was appropriate for all drivers under the organisation's remit to have to wear frontal head restraints.

An FHR device is fastened around the driver's neck, and tethers the helmet to the shoulder straps to keep the driver's head more stable in the event of a crash.

Mr Chapman said: "Quite plainly, if Mr Devereux had been wearing an FHR it would have reduced the movement of his head and may well have saved his life."
