Novelist. He was best known for his 1985 novel "Like a Banjo String," which served as the basis of the 1991 film "Life on a String." His essay "I and the Temple of Earth" has been considered as one of the best Chinese prose essays of the 20th century. Born in Beijing, he graduated from Tsinghua High School in 1967. In 1969, he was sent to rural Shaanxi as part of the Down to the Countryside Movement. He was paralyzed there in an accident, and in 1972, was sent back to Beijing for treatment. In 1979, he published his first novel "The Law Professor and His Wife." His story "My Faraway Clear Peace River" won the National Excellent Short Story Prize in 1983. In 1998, he was diagnosed with uremia and required dialysis three times weekly. He died of cerebral hemorrhage. He was cremated, however the Temple of Earth in Beijing had refused to bury his ashes.
