I visited Warm Springs Cemetery in Warm Springs, Bath Co., Virginia in August 1999 while attending Howard R. Hammond's Bolar Family Reunion and took a photo of his gravestone. The spelling of his surname varies frequently, one L, two L's, an E or an A. It is believed he dropped the second L that his father used most often.

His birth date 14 Jul 1775, is written in his parent's family bible. He was born in the Jackson River home, then in Botetourt Co., which later became current day Bath Co., Virginia. He was originally buried on the same homestead but his gravestone was moved in 1972, to make way for the Gathright Dam.

On the 21 day of Dec 1848, before Alexander H McClintic, Justice of the Peace for Bath County, Major John Bollar (Jr.) personally appeared and swore an oath, that "he is a son of John Bollar dec'd who was a Captain in the Revolution, and is command of a Company at the Battle of Guillford C.H." He heard his father talk of William McClintic, a wounded soldier in his company at the battle of Guilford Court House in NC. Signed by John Bolar (Jr.) This statement was for the pension benefit of McClintic's wife Alice. Wm McClintic and Alice McClintic Cavendish, pension #41819, NARAM804. The National Archives. The National Archives (see 2 photos, one each, on his site and his father's.

He served in the War of 1812, in the 81st Virginia Militia Regiment in Bath Co., Virginia. He served as a Major per Mike Lyman's 2012 Master Burials List of War of 1812 Veterans in some Virginia counties (12-11).

#8420, Bollar, John, Jr., Major 8_?_ (hard to read, 82?) VA Militia, enlisted 20 Oct 1809, Return dated Richmond, June 1/14.U.S. Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798 - 1815, B index, M233, GS#350308.

John Bolar aged 83 (about 1775), was born on the Jackson River, in Bath Co., Virginia, the son of John and Margaret Bolar, died 1 Sep 1858 in Jackson River, Bath Co., Virginia, of old age. He was a farmer and the spouse of Esther Bolar. His son in law, Wm H Revercomb was the informant. 1858 Bath Co., Virginia Death Register, line 10, no page number, original record.

I suspect there is a slight error in his age on the stone although it is very hard to read. If he was born on 14 Jul 1775 and was 83 yr, 1 mo and 15 days he should have died instead on 29 Aug 1858 instead. The number of days is off.

His father John Bolar, Sr. is buried behind his grave and his son John Wilson Bolar is buried beside his grave.

His hard to read gravestone may say:
JOHN BOLAR, SR.
DIED
Sepr. _?_ 1858
Aged
8_?_ Yr. 1 Mon & 15 ds
(yes, his gravestone says SR, as he had a son John Bolar also)
