Writer, Folklorist. He was best known for his novels that focus on the people of the southern provinces of China and Southeast Asia. Born in Tainan, Taiwan, his family escaped to Shantou after the Japanese invation in Taiwan in 1895. After returning from Southeast Asia, his father obtained his family registration in Fujian and settled down in Guangzhou where he lived and studied. After the 1911 Revolution, he accompanied his father and taught in primary and secondary schools in Zhangzhou. In 1917, he went to Yenching University for his undergraduate studies. He was appointed as professor at Yenching in 1927, and taught at Peking and Tsinghua University. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he supported the war against Japan. He died of a heart attack in 1941. His famous works include 'Rain in Mountain,' 'Danger by Nest Falls,' and 'Peanuts.'
