At the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 in Niagara, Ontario the 19th "Lincoln" Regiment and the 44th "Lincoln and Welland" Regiment were placed on Active Duty and detailed to provide the core of the Welland Canal Force, the mission of which was to guard the locks and shipping facilities along the Welland Canal.
