His passion for singing and entertainment started at a very young age, as during his childhood he would entertain his family and neighbours. His big break came after he won the Bintang RTM singing competition in 1976. In 1982, he acted in the film "Kami," which was his only film. In 1989, he was named "Asia's No. 1 Performer" at the Asian Popular Music Awards competition held at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the song "One Thousand Million Smiles." He is the first singer from Malaysia to win the award. He was also a writer, cartoonist and successful entrepreneur with the promotion of his canned drink Sudi, which at the time was 5% of the carbonated drink market in Malaysia. In 1991, he collapsed while singing at Penang, and was admitted to a hospital. He died in 1992 after suffering from pneumonia for 7 months.
