Son of Judge Isaac Thompson and Mary Gardiner, husband of Elizabeth Havens, whom he married on July 4, 1796 at Shelter Island, and father of David, Junius, Mary Gardiner (married Samuel Buel Gardiner), Elizabeth (married Alonzo Brown), Jonathan, Dr. Abraham Gardiner, and George W. Thompson.

aged 73 years and 23 days.

During a residence of more than half a century in the City of New York, he filled various Public Stations of trust and honour with the highest integrity, impartiality and fidelity. Respected for his unrighteousness, esteemed for his unassuming worth, beloved for his disinterestedness and benevolence, he died peacefully hoping for justification through faith in Christ. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest before me thy face forever. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. From everlasting to everlasting Amen and Amen."
