Matt Fields was the son of Selana 'Slaney' Fields and Phoebe Caudill. He married Mary Riddle Fields on August 9, 1913 in Benham, Harlan County, Kentucky where they resided. Matt was a coal miner for most of his life, and he passed away on April 15, 1959 at Notre Dame Hospital of a stroke. He did not have an autopsy, and was buried in Huff Cemetery, Cumberland, Kentucky.
