Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1978 to 1986 and 1988 to 1989), he played at the second baseman position with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves and Montreal Expos. Born Domaso Domingo Garcia, he was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1975. He broke into the Major Leagues on June 24, 1978 and played in eighteen games with the Yankees' team which went on to win the World Series that season. After he was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays (he was named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Team), he secured the starting second baseman position and produced a career high 185 hits, while boasting a .310 batting average which earned him a Silver Slugger Award. During the course of his career, Garcia was a threat on the base paths and topped the 20 steal mark four-times. In addition, he was a two-time American League All-Star. In 1,032 career regular season games, he compiled 1,108 hits, with a .283 lifetime batting average. Shortly after retiring from baseball, he endured a serious health challenge as he was diagnosed with a brain tumor which left him with impaired speech. Garcia went on to mentor children with traumatic medical conditions.
