Juanita Martinez was the daughter of Antonio Domingo and Maria Manuela (Trujillo) Martinez. Her siblings were Maria Andrea (Martinez) Espinosa, Emilia (Martinez) Casaus and Juan Jose Martinez all born in the Taos area. Juanita's mother died possibly during or after child birth of Maria Rita Martinez born 26 Mar 1870, who later died in 1870. Juanita had two other siblings that died as infants. The eldest daughter Andrea stayed with her father to take care of Juan Jose the youngest child. Juanita and Emilia went to live with their grandparents Jose Miguel and Antonia (Valdez) Trujillo whose son Seledon Trujillo followed Lucien Maxwell to Fort Sumner to work as a cowboy. As a young lady she loved going to dances and not sure, but believe this is where she met Pat Garrett. They married by a justice of the peace and according to a magazine article interviewing Seledon's son Joe, it states she died 15 days after their marriage.

The attached clipping was found by a cousin of mine that gave us the clue to where Juanita had been buried. There is no marker for her grave, not sure if there ever was one or it may have washed away during the flood.

Just to set the record straight, Juanita Martinez Garrett was not the sister of Apolinaria Gutierrez Garrett as some have stated.

A dedication ceremony was held at this cemetery on September 25, 2021, to unveil Juanita's headstone. Family, Friends, Historians, Mayor Gallegos, Don Sweet, Members of the Wild West History Association and the Chamber of Commerce all gathered for this Historial Event.
