Journalist, Writer, Historian, Archaeologist. He made a significant contribution towards the establishment of the Chinese literature and the editing of a variety of literary magazines. In 1917, he studied at the Beijing Railway Management School. There, he read a lot of books and developed an interest in social sciences, Chinese and Western literature. In 1921, he, along with others, founded the earliest literary society of the New Literature Movement. In 1923, he became the chief editor of the monthly magazine Fiction Monthly. In late 1931, he became a professor at both Yenching University and Tsinghua University, and the president of the Faculty of Arts. He published his first major work on the history of Chinese vernacular literature in 1932, followed by three volumes of general and critical essays and an outline of Russian literature. He was killed when the aircraft carrying his national cultural delegates crashed on its way to Afghanistan.
