Politician. He was the third president of the Malayan Chinese Association, and the Malaysian Minister of Finance from 1959 to 1974. He was also active in the Independence Malaya Party. In the 1952 election, the party took part but successfully won one of the 12 contested seats. In 1955, he was elected a Member of Parliament in Malacca. He was appointed the Deputy Chairman of the Alliance in 1964, and in that same year he led his party to victory in the General Election. In 1973, he requested a position as Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet, but was refused. He retired from politics in 1974. After his retirement, he became a financial advisor to the government on economic issues.
