Musician and Producer. He was a founding member and guitarist for the British post-punk band Gang of Four. Born Andrew James Dalrymple Gill, he was an art student at Leeds University when he started Gang of Four with lead singer and main lyricist John King, bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. Gill and King, friends from high school, had used travel grants to visit New York City’s burgeoning punk scene in 1976. Over five decades, they released several studio albums, including 'Entertainment!' (1979), 'Solid Gold' (1981), 'Hard' (1983), 'Shrinkwrapped' (1995), 'Return the Gift' (2005) and 'Happy Now' (2019) as well as several live, extended play and compilation albums. As a producer, he worked on projects with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Franz Ferdinand, Stranglers, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, the Jesus Lizard, the Futureheads and several others. Gill, who was the only founding member of the band to last throughout, died of a respiratory disease which was diagnosed in 2019.
