Poet. He is one of the most celebrated Chinese poets of the 20th century. Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, he was admitted to Shanghai University in 1923. When the university closed in 1925, he was transferred to Aurora University in Shanghai, where he majored in French. In 1926, he joined the Communist Youth League. At the same time he, along with Shi Zhecun, Du Heng and others, founded the "Yingluo" magazine, which ran from March to April 1926. In 1927, he published his poem "Alley In The Rain," which would be his most famous poem. In 1928, he founded a publishing house with Shi Zhecun and Feng Hsueh-Feng. In 1929, his first collection of poems "My Memory" was published. In 1932, he went to study in France at the University of Lyon's Institut Franco-chinois. He was expelled in 1935 due to poor attendence and academic performance. In 1937, his third collection of poems was published. During the Sino-Japanese War, he worked in Hong Kong as a newspaper editor. In 1941, he was arrested and imprisoned for several months by the Japanese. In 1946, he became a professor at Jinan University, where he taught Spanish. He was dismissed the following year. Suffering from asthma, he died in 1950 after an accidental overdose of ephedrine, which he took to control his asthma.
