Keith was the fiance of CNN/Court TV Commentator Nancy Grace while they were college students. His murder was the sole reason Nancy Grace became a law student, prosecutor and which set her on the path to her career as a victim's advocate. Keith was studying geology at the University of Georgia at Athens and Nancy was a student at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Keith was working part-time for Ingram Construction Company at Georgia Kraft Plywood Co. outside Madison, Ga. Their engagement was a sweetly adored secret that only Keith's sister, Judy, knew about. Nancy's family loved Keith and found him a true southern gentleman with his wit and charm while Keith's parents adored Nancy and her southern classiness. Sadly, Keith was shot several times in his truck at the entrance road to the Georgia Kraft Plywood Co. and US Hwy. 278, 1 ½ miles from downtown Madison, Georgia by a co-worker and found lifeless in his truck by the site foreman. His assailant was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, but is in his 26th year at the Hancock State Prison at Sparta, Georgia. (He was released from prison in December 2006.) Keith was followed in death by his parents, William Randolph "Bill" Griffen and Maysell Griffin. He is survived by his stepmother, Linda Gulley Griffin, Colbert; sister and brother in law Judy and Steve Bates, Hull; brother and sister in law, Steve and Cindy Griffin, Athens; Uncle Shelby (Pap) Griffin, Kingsland, Ark.; Aunts, Lavonne Shollenberger, Pennsylvania, Evelyn Clark, Kingsland, Ark., and Shirley Manus, Chattanooga, Tenn.; neices and nephews Casey, and wife, Catherine Bates, Shelley Bates, Taylor Griffin, Macy Griffin, Charlsie Griffin, Natalie Tolbert, Courtney Tolbert, Kayla Tolbert, Larisa Dearnley, Josiah Dearnley and Isaac Dearnley. Keith is very deeply missed.
