Author. He was an Estonian poet and prose writer. Born to deeply religious parents Benjamin and Marianna Liiv (née Pärn), he was the youngest of seven children raised in the village of Rupsi in Tartu County. Scholastically gifted, he began writing in his youth and later worked as a teacher and in the editorial offices of several newspapers. His first poem, "Maikuu öö" was published at age twenty-one on September 3, 1885 in the Tallinn newspaper "Virulane." Several critically acclaimed works were published in his lifetime. His collection of 495 poems "Luuletused" published in 1909 are among the most famous in Estonian literature. However, most of his recognition as a writer came posthumously. He suffered with severe mental instability during his adulthood; in 1893, he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. His legacy in Estonia is well-remembered with numerous memorials dedicated to him throughout the country, a number of streets named in his honor, a secondary school that bears his name, and in 1965, the Juhan Liiv Poetry Prize was created.
