In 1812, before he was 20 years of age, Levi served as a sergeant in Capt. David Williams' Co., 17th Regt. Mead's NY Militia, War of 1812. He was undoubtedly also the Levi "Dealand," who served in Capt. Reuben Elwood's Co.

He fathered 15 children with two wives; one son by the first wife (Hannah Brown) was Daniel Brown Deland, who founded the D. B. Deland Chemical Company in Fairport, NY on the banks of the Erie Canal and which manufactured the celebrated Deland "Cap Sheaf" Brand baking soda.
A son by his second wife (Electa Tracy) was Henry Addison Deland, who was the founder of Deland, Florida.
