Little is known about Amy before her marriage to Thomas Reed. There is no solid record indicating her surname was Cox, but there is, however, a good amount of circumstantial evidence, as well as mountains of DNA evidence. Below is the circumstantial evidence.

- Census records indicate Amy was born in Kentucky in about 1799. Amy and Thomas Reed's second eldest son was named Samuel C. Reed, and he died as a young man of 23 in 1844. Thomas Reed's niece, Elizabeth Covington Davis, named her son born about 1848, Samuel Cox Davis. She quite likely could have named her son after her first cousin who had just died a couple of years earlier. That would imply Amy and Thomas Reed had a son named Samuel Cox Reed...perhaps named for her father.

- Parmenas P. Cox b. 1805 KY lived and died in Giles Co., TN. His eldest son was named Samuel and his eldest daughter Amanda. (Amy could be short for Amanda.) Thomas and Amy Reed's eldest son was John P. C. Reed. It's possible that "P. C." stood for "Parmenas Cox." Parmenas' middle name is said to have been "Palmore," and there was a Parmenus Palmore who lived Warren Co., KY where we believe the Cox family came from.

- The above-mentioned John P.C. Reed had a son named Samuel Cox Reed.

- Samuel Cox b. abt. 1797 in KY can be found living in Limestone Co., AL in the 1850 census. He was married to Charity Manning. Early court records of Giles County from the 1820s show a Samuel Cox Sr. and Samuel Cox Jr. were in the area.

- The above Samuel Cox b. abt. 1797 had a son named Fulker Cox, and there is a Fulker Cox on the 1800 tax list for Warren Co., KY. Additionally, a "Fowlker Coxe" can be found in the 1820 census for Giles County who is listed as 45 or over, and a "Fulker Cox" is on the 1836 Giles Co. Tax List.
